    June marks the midway point for VA Tech’s Executive Master of Natural Resource students. In the XMNR program, students develop leadership, management, and administrative skills to achieve sustainability goals. Students spend the first half of the year developing and applying leadership skills to local sustainability challenges. During the summer, students expand their view and practice to include regional issues.

    The Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability educates, inspires, and empowers professionals to achieve their career goals by offering credentials, competencies, connections, and confidence. Executive Master of Natural Resources (XMNR) graduates Kate Fritz, Abbi Huntzinger, and Molly Brown are three of the many XMNR alumni that work as sustainability leaders in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. While their responsibilities vary, these graduate often collaborate and rely on the work of the others to ensure environmental protection of this important mid-Atlantic drainage basin.

    In May of each year, students in Virginia Tech’s Executive Master of Natural Resources (XMNR) graduate degree program continue their year-long professional development journey by focusing on collective impact for climate mitigation via a case study of Arlington County’s Community Energy Plan. Throughout the XMNR program, students use case studies to develop strategic leadership, management, and administration skills for solving local, regional, and global sustainability problems. The Arlington County case provides students an opportunity to take a close look at how a local government is taking charge of its energy future and planning to meet ambitious climate mitigation goals.

    On October 29th, 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit New York City tragically killing 44 New Yorkers and causing over $19 billion in damages and economic losses. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed, more than 88,000 building were flooded, 23,000 businesses were impacted, and infrastructure throughout the city was substantially disrupted. It was described by Mayor Bloomberg as “the worst natural disaster ever to hit New York City.”
