Joseph H. Maroon has more than 30 years of experience in senior leadership positions with legislative and executive branch agencies of Virginia state government and with a leading private non-profit conservation organization. Between 2010 and 2013, he operated his own environmental consulting practice, Maroon Consulting LLC, assisting businesses, nonprofits and governments on issues relating to the Chesapeake Bay, pollution trading, regional watershed approaches, stormwater management, land conservation, and environmental policy. He was appointed by two governors to serve as the agency director of Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (2002-2010), and was previously the Virginia Executive Director of Chesapeake Bay Foundation for 16 years and a senior analyst with the Virginia Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission. Maroon as received numerous awards including the Outstanding Virginia Environmental Leader Award in 2000, the Gerald McCarthy Award for Environmental Conflict Resolution from UVA, and the Water Resources Leadership Award from Virginia Tech.
Joe was recently named the new Executive Director of the Virginia Environmental Endowment, a nonprofit, independent grant making organization, created in 1977 as a result of a federal court order in partial settlement of a pollution case on the James River in Virginia. When combined with matching funds, grants awarded since then to a wide variety of organizations represent an investment of more than $70 million in environmental improvement. Joe has served on several boards and commissions including the Principal Staff Committee to the Chesapeake Bay Partnership and is currently an at‐large member of the Bay Citizen Advisory Committee and a member of a regulatory advisory panel on nutrient trading. In addition to serving as a Fellow at CLiGS and faculty in Virginia Tech's Executive Master of Natural Resources (XMNR) program, Joe is an adjunct faculty member in the University of Virginia’s Urban and Environmental Planning Program. He has a Master’s in Public Administration and B.A. in Political Science from Virginia Tech.
