The global employment market for sustainability professionals is booming and a wide variety of jobs exist at all levels and in all sectors, including business, government, and civil society organizations.
Our purpose is to help students in Virginia Tech's Executive Master of Natural Resources (XMNR) program gain the credentials, competencies, confidence, and connections to have greater influence in the workplace and their communities, locally and globally. We work with each student to help them accomplish their own academic and career goals and lead from where they are.

WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS?
Approximately half of XMNR students are “career advancers,” meaning they have an academic and/or professional background in this field and are looking to use their Master’s degree to help improve their job performance or advance on a particular career path.
Approximately half of XMNR students are “career changers,” meaning they may not have any academic or professional experience in the field and are looking to make a significant career transition.
Some students are "career starters" or "restarters" who have taken a break from work to raise families or pursue interests among other reasons.

CAREER ADVISING AND COACHING
All XMNR students have access to personal career advisors and coaches as soon as you are accepted by the Graduate School. You don’t have to wait until classes begin to start working with our career experts and you can continue to use their services for at least two years post graduation.
Even if you have a solid grasp of your values and skills, career coaching can help you:
- Think strategically about your key accomplishments
- See how you can apply your previous experience and expertise in a new field
- Focus your energy on the best next steps
- Develop a career path that leads to the work you really want to do
- Evaluate and expand your professional network
